According to an announcement by the National Communications Commission (NCC) of Taiwan, as part of the “Whole-Society Defense Resilience City Drill,” 4G and 5G mobile data communication restriction drills will be conducted in certain areas of Taiwan.
During the drill, mobile data speeds in the target areas will be restricted to approximately 1% of normal speeds (approx. 0.5 to 1 Mbps). Consequently, communication-dependent services such as cashless payments, social media, and online maps may become practically unavailable or highly unstable.
If you are currently traveling or planning to travel to Taiwan, please check the target dates, times, and areas below, and make necessary preparations in advance.
■ Affected Dates, Times, and Areas
【Phase 1: Central Taiwan Area】
・Date & Time: Monday, August 10, 2026, 14:30 – 15:00 (Taiwan Local Time)
・Target Areas: Taichung City, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Miaoli County, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County
【Phase 2: Northern Taiwan Area】
・Date & Time: Thursday, August 13, 2026, 14:30 – 15:00 (Taiwan Local Time)
・Target Areas: Taipei City, New Taipei City, Keelung City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Yilan County
*Southern Taiwan is not included in this drill, so communication there will not be affected.
■ Services NOT Affected During the Drill
・Standard voice calls (excluding IP phone and internet-based calls)
・SMS (Short Message Service)
・Emergency Alerts (Cell Broadcast)
・Wi-Fi connections and landlines (Wi-Fi provided at hotels, restaurants, etc.)
■ Recommendations and Countermeasures for Customers
1. Download Offline Maps in Advance
We highly recommend downloading offline maps (such as Google Maps) beforehand if you plan to use navigation during the drill.
2. Avoid Important Communications
Please refrain from conducting important video conferences or sending/receiving large files during the drill, or use a stable Wi-Fi environment instead.
3. Confirm Meeting Points in Advance
If you plan to separate from your travel companions, we recommend deciding on a meeting point or alternative contact method (such as standard voice calls) beforehand.
Please note that this communication restriction is an official government drill in Taiwan and is not due to any defect in your SIM card or communication device.
